'Homeland' Season 6 Cast News: Anna Gunn From 'Breaking Bad' And 2 Others Who Can Play Female President

When "Homeland" returns for Season 6 in January 2017, Carrie Mathison, played by Claire Danes, will be following orders from a female U.S. president. The actress herself confirmed this bit, but didn't say who would be playing the role.

Claire Danes revealed this detail at a New York panel, and she described the character as "a composite of all of the different candidates," referring to the ongoing election season in America, per Entertainment Weekly. The new president to appear in "Homeland" Season 6 is also going to "challenge the norms," which means she will have many enemies while in office. But she and Carrie Mathison will get along just fine.

"Homeland" Season 6 will begin filming in New York this summer. So, who's likely up for the part of female U.S. president in "Homeland" Season 6? Here are some ideas:

Anna Gunn - Best known for her role on "Breaking Bad," where she won an award for Best Supporting Actress at the Emmys, Anna Gunn's last TV work was on the limited series, "Gracepoint" for Fox. She was set to headline the "Criminal Minds" spinoff in 2015, but this didn't push through. She's already finished with two movies, which are set to debut in theaters this year. Her schedule has freed up to accommodate a new TV show appearance. Gunn would be the perfect rebellious female president, as she has expertly played strong women roles in the past.

Jessica Lange - The accomplished actress has expressed she's finished with "American Horror Story" for television and was, in fact, not part of fifth offering, "American Horror Story: Hotel" in 2015. The actress has been busy working on stage and has recently won a Tony Award, per New York Post. She's another feisty and powerful woman who could best fit the role of U.S. president on television.

Alfre Woodard - Two years ago, the actress portrayed a strong and conniving female leader in "The Last Ship" and she has also portrayed a president in the short-lived series "State of Affairs," per Bustle. This shows just how much Alfre Woodward is right for the part and it would be great to watch her character ally with Carrie Mathison.

So, what do you think "Homeland" fans? Do you have other choices for the role aside from these stars? Share your ideas in the comments!
