"The Leftovers" will be airing its third and final season on HBO a little later than anticipated. However, producer Damon Lindelof has teased what's in store in the show's last season and it should be worth the wait.
"The Leftovers" will not run any new episodes in 2016 following last season's December 2015 finale. Instead, the show has been earmarked for a Season 3 2017 premiere, with the way things have been progressing in production.
Damon Lindelof told Deadline that so far, they have already shot two episodes of "The Leftovers" Season 3 in Texas. The rest of the season will be filmed in Australia and production Down Under has started for some of the cast and crew.
It is expected that filming out of the country will happen until September, after which Damon Lindelof will do post production until just before the 2016 holiday season. Hence, "The Leftovers" Season 3 air date will fall in 2017, but HBO has yet to announce a confirmed specific date.
While the process of finishing "The Leftovers" Season 3 looks long, it follows a concrete direction. Damon Lindelof and the writers already have a specific ending in mind. There won't be anything shocking, but it will attempt to draw feelings from the viewers that they would have never predicted, per Slash Film.
Set to return in "The Leftovers" Season 3 are most of the cast members like Justin Theroux, Carrie Coon, Liv Tyler, Amy Brenneman, Chris Zylka, Margaret Qualley, Janel Moloney and Christopher Eccleston. The new family introduced in "The Leftovers" Season 2 will be back as well and they are played by Regina King, Kevin Carroll, Jasmin Savoy-Brow and Jovan Adepo.
Ann Dowd is expected to also be in "The Leftovers" Season 3, but she will not appear in a regular capacity, per TV Line. Scott Glenn has been promoted to series regular and Lindsay Duncan is the newest cast addition, per Screen Crush.
