‘Captain Marvel’ Actress Brie Larson Meets ‘Very High Bar’ Set By Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man

Brie Larson was officially confirmed for the role of Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, at Marvel's Comic-Con 2016 panel last weekend. Chris Evans, Marvel Cinematic Universe's Steve Rogers/Captain America, previously expressed his approval of choosing Larson for the superhero role. And of course, "Captain Marvel" actress Brie Larson's casting wouldn't come through if Marvel executives aren't fully convinced that she can take on the role.

Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man Set A 'Very High' Bar For Marvel

In an interview with Cinema Blend after Marvel's SDCC panel, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said good casting decisions have hugely affected MCU's success, starting with choosing Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man many years ago. According to Feige, Marvel "set the bar very high" when they picked Downey and since then, they have patterned their decisions after that very first casting and ensured that they meet the audience's expectations.

"Carol Danvers needs to be as rich and textured and real as the best of our characters," Feige further told Cinema Blend. "Maybe even more so. And we got very lucky that Brie - who has all of those attributes, and an Academy Award now - was still very interested in signing up and joining us to bring this character to life."

"Captain Marvel" actress Brie Larson's career skyrocketed after she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in "Room." Prior to her debut as Captain Marvel on the big screen, the 26-year-old actress will be seen in Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' "Kong: Skull Island" to be released in March 2017.

'Captain Marvel' Comics Writer Speaks Up

For those unacquainted with the character, Carol Danvers (also called Ms. Marvel in her earlier appearances in the Marvel comics universe) is a fighter pilot and combatant with alien DNA. Her powers include enhanced strength, flight, and shooting energy beams from her hands, Marvel.com listed.

Carol works with both the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics. This means she could be the bridge between those two teams when they have to join forces and defeat one great enemy -- Thanos -- in the MCU.

Kelly Sue DeConnick, who wrote Carol's debut as Captain Marvel from 2012 to 2015, said she's "psyched" about Larson's casting. According to the writer, Larson has "a gravitas" and "a power to her," but she also displays "a sense of humor and playfulness," Vanity Fair reported.

DeConnick, however, wished that Carol's big screen iteration will be tall, given that she's 5'11" in the comics. But she still thinks "Captain Marvel" actress Brie Larson will do the role justice and impose an intimidating persona even if the actress is just five-foot-seven. "Captain Marvel" will bow in theaters on March 8, 2019.
