'Code Black' Season 2 Spoilers, Air Date & News: Why Christa & Neal's Absence Won't Be Explained When Show Returns

"Code Black" is scheduled to premiere its second season on CBS on Wednesday, Sept. 28. While it was earlier announced that Christa (Bonnie Sommerville) and Neal (Raza Jaffrey) will no longer be part of the show, fans of the characters might be disappointed to know that their absence will also not be explained in the series.

"Code Black" executive producer Michael Seitzman confirmed in a TV Line interview that the show won't be addressing why Christy & Neal are no longer working at Angel's Memorial Hospital. He said that it made the most sense to not mention the characters in "Code Black" Season 2 anymore. He defended that not talking about Christa & Neal would be the most realistic.

The writers of "Code Black" agonized over how they would address their characters in Season 2, since they know that there will be an unhappy fan no matter what. Ultimately though, not acknowledging the absence of the two characters might be a good thing because it could make Christa or Neal's return possible in future episodes or seasons of "Code Black."

In a previous Parent Herald report, Marcia Gay Harden acknowledged the departure of her former cast mates, Sommerville and Jaffrey, from "Code Black." She also said that in her mind, she sees Christa & Neal moving on with what they really want in life.

But with two characters gone, "Code Black" has actually added a handful of new faces in Season 2, led by Rob Lowe as a combat-trained doctor. Noah Gray-Cabey, Nafessa Williams and Emily Tyra are the new residents of Angels Memorial, while Boris Kodjoe (as Campbell) and Jillian Murray (as Heather) have been bumped to series regulars. Melanie Chandra (as Malaya), William Allen Young (as Rollie) and Luis Guzman (as Jesse) are still in the cast.

"Code Black" Season 2 premieres at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28 on CBS. Stay tuned for more updates about the series.
