Mobile phones have become a common device for parents and children. Parents use them to communicate with their children and ensure their safety even if they are away from each other. Unfortunately, the arrival of smartphones offered more entertainment to children that they have become addicted and glued to their devices.
To answer this issue, Edward Timpson, a British education minister is calling the attention of the schools to teach children Buddhist meditation and yoga in their classes. Yoga and meditation are great ways to help children unplug from the online world that keeps them from being productive and from enjoying the company of the people around them.
Telegraph reported that in a speech, Timpson wants the schools to teach children the art of "mindfulness." Children should appreciate this as a normal part of their daily routine.
Mindfulness or meditation has been shown to be very efficient in helping young individuals to be resilient to stress. It also helps them to be happier and more receptive.
According to the Buddhist Centre, Buddhist meditation encourages one to develop concentration, clarity, positive attitude and calmness. With meditation, children will learn the patterns and habits of their minds and they will be more focused on the present.
Yoga and meditation are all about oneself. It helps one to be more aware of himself, to make the most of the opportunities that come his way and to appreciate the relationship he has around him. These practices deliver healthy living and emotional security.
Meditation for children will help them improve their relationship with their parents, siblings, classmates and teachers. This practice will also help them deal with the anxieties, stress and tension that they encounter at their tender age.
Timpson wants schools to include programs that encourage children to talk about their feelings and emotions. Schools can include this in their PSHE curriculum and could offer role play in drama lessons and meditation or yoga sessions.
