"Narcos" has been told in the voice of Boyd Holbrook as the DEA agent Steve Murphy in its first two seasons. As the character who was historically present when Pablo Escobar was captured and killed in Colombia, he played a crucial role in the story of how authorities brought the drug kingpin down.
But with "Narcos" Season 2 ending with the death of Pablo Escobar, questions have risen regarding the participation of Boyd Holbrook as Steve Murphy, or his partner Javier Pena (played by Pedro Pascal), in the succeeding seasons. As Deadline has confirmed, "Narcos" has received a third and fourth season renewal on Netflix, so what could this mean for the actors involved?
Boyd Holbrook said via The Hollywood Reporter that Steve Murphy's return in "Narcos" Season 3 is still being ironed out, so his future in the show remains unanswered at this point. However, he's aware that his character remained in his line of work after Escobar's death. "Steve didn't retire from the DEA until, I believe, two years ago," Holbrook said. "He was very active in the DEA for a long time," he added, suggesting there could be a way for his character to still be involved in "Narcos" Season 3 and 4.
As for Pedro Pascal's return, viewers of "Narcos" Season 2 have seen his character, Javier Pena, being pulled out from Colombia at the tail-end of the plan to capture Pablo Escobar. He did not get to experience the actual capture, even if he was involved and did a lot of work on it from the beginning. However, this storyline was dramatized for the series and it wasn't exactly how the real life events went down.
Producers of "Narcos" relayed that the upcoming season might focus on the Cali drug cartel, which grew even bigger than Pablo Escobar's own operation. According to Slash Film, the DEA agents from the first and second seasons of "Narcos" have little part in this event in real life.
"Narcos" continues to be streamed on Netflix, via subscription service. The third season is expected to be released on the site in mid-2017.
