'Game Of Thrones' Spinoff News & Update: George RR Martin, Producers Sound Off On Prequel Plans - Is It Really Happening?

Though "Game of Thrones" (GOT) emerged as the biggest winner at the recent Emmys, fans of the show know there are only a few episodes left to HBO's highly-acclaimed series. With the show's inevitable ending set, plans of a "Game of Thrones" spinoff has been sowing in the grapevine for a while now. The talks have sparked again after GOT creator George RR Martin hinted about it at the Emmy red carpet Sunday.

"There's a lot of material there and I'm writing more," said the best-selling author about the potential for a "Game of Thrones" spinoff, via Entertainment Weekly. "I do have thousands of pages of fake history."

Yet, George RR Martin clarified that he's not about to start thinking of a "Game of Thrones" spinoff or talk prequel plans now. The main focus is on capping the current stories in "Game of Thrones."

"Game of Thrones" Season 7 is coming up in 2017, while Season 8 -- the final season -- will be closing the series in 2018. In between these two, there will be 13 episodes to develop, aside from Martin's work on the novels. "We still have this show to finish and I still have two books to finish," the author said.

Even "Game of Thrones" producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have begged off talking about any spinoff or prequel plans because they have no knowledge about this. "I'm sure there will be other series set in Westeros," said Benioff via TV Line. "But for us, this is it," he said, referring to the end of "Game of Thrones."

It's no secret that the show is HBO's money-maker and critics-pleaser. From a business point of view, it makes sense to keep the show going, if fans still want more "Game of Thrones" stories. Though HBO confirmed the end date for the series, it's not completely closing its doors.

"It's something I'm not opposed to, but of course it has to make sense creatively," said HBO president Casey Bloys, via another Entertainment Weekly report. But everyone involved, including the cable network, is on the same page about focusing on delivering the best end to "Game of Thrones" first. Perhaps, spinoff and prequel talks will come up again next year.
