The fourth installment in the Microsoft's "Gears of War" series, "Gears of War 4," arrives in just a little under three weeks and the publishers have decided to release the launch trailer for the game so that fans can get a new idea of what to expect in the continuation of the epic series.
The trailer was released on the official Xbox YouTube channel, as reported by CNET, showcasing both new and returning elements coming with "Gears of War 4." The trailer began with a voice over from "Gears of War" trilogy protagonist Marcus Fenix, provided by John DiMaggio.
The now much older Marcus described the 25-year interim that took place until the story of "Gears of War 4" since the titular Gears won the war against the Lambent and Locust Horde for the Coalition of Ordered Governments and humanity, but at great sacrifice. "Gears of War3" ended with the protagonists detonating a weapon that not only wiped out the Locust and the Lambent, but also the planet Sera's fossil fuels which left humanity without an important resource.
For the upcoming "Gears of War 4," the role of the main protagonist has been taken over from Marcus by JD Fenix, his son with fellow Gear Anya Stroud. Joining JD are Del Walker, his best friend, and Kait Diaz, an Outsider who grew up outside of the walled cities the COG built as havens for humanity.
"Gears of War 4" was developed by The Coalition, which took over from series creator Epic Games. With the new development team, "Gears of War 4" is promising to bring a host of new elements to add to the returning ones from previous entries in the series.
One of the main returning elements to "Gears of War 4" are the iconic chainsaw-bayoneted Lancers, which the characters in the trailer were shown putting to good use, and the tank top-like Gear armor. As for the new toys, the trailer shared some snippets of the characters getting into hulking mechanized suits, though to want extent they will be playable are unknown.
"Gears of War 4" will also feature a brand new enemy aiming to eradicate humanity: the Swarm. As a whole, the Swam is much like the Locust horde with their mutated insectoid features; the Swarm's Drones even look almost the exact same like their namesake in the Locust with some minor differences.
All in all, "Gears of War 4" is shaping up to be an entry that might be able to readapt the "Gears of War" series for a new generation of fans without changing the formula all too much. "Gears of War 4" will be released on the Xbox One and Windows 10 on October 11.
