Disney's "Lion King" is set for a new live action remake, and will be directed by Jon Favreau. The Disney classic will be the next to get a live action makeover, after the success of "Maleficent," "Cinderella," and "The Jungle Book."
The "Lion King" will always have its place in the hearts of those who were enchanted by the original animated movie which premiered in 1994, and now, over two decades later, the beloved animals of the African savannah will get a new look in the new remake.
According to the Disney official website, Favreau will be at the helm for the new "Lion King" movie, after the massive success of this year's "The Jungle Book." The live action remake of "The Jungle Book" was considered groundbreaking, with child actor Neel Sethi as Mowgli, surrounded by Baloo, King Louie, Shere Khan, and all of the animals from the original movie, brought to life with the use of CGI. They look to do the same with the "Lion King" remake.
"Lion King" still remains as one of the most popular and top grossing Disney animated movies of all time, grossing over $900 million since it's initial release, the movie's soundtrack has sold 14 million copies worldwide and won an Academy Award for "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" by Elton John, along with multiple Grammy awards, and the stage version of the show has garnered 6 Tony awards, and remains as one of the biggest draws on Broadway, according to Yahoo! Movies.
The soundtrack of the original film will also be used for the "Lion King" remake, just like the original soundtrack of "The Beauty and the Beast" will be featured in the upcoming 2017 movie.
Favreau will also once again direct another "The Jungle Book" movie, as a sequel is already in the works. No release date has been set yet for "The Jungle Book 2" nor the "Lion King" remake.
