After more than a year away from the golfing scene, Former world no. 1 golfer Tiger Woods is returning to the sport. Tiger Woods is committing to the PGA Tour Safeway Open in Napa, California this coming Oct. 13.
According to ESPN, the Safeway Open will be Tiger Woods' first tournament after Woods tied for the 10th spot in the 2015 Wyndham Championship. It is also the first tournament open of the 2016-17 golf season
Tiger Woods had two back surgeries last year: the first one in September, and another in October. Recovery and rehabilitation was slow for Tiger Woods, who stressed the importance of taking his time in returning from injury, cites CNN.
During the U.S. Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National last Sept. 27 - Oct. 2, Tiger Woods was Vice captain to Davis Love III, who was the Team's captain. Tiger Woods did not mention anything about his recovery or whether he would play for the Safeway Open. Though Tiger Woods may have committed to playing for the Safeway Opening, players can still freely withdraw any time.
"My rehabilitation is to the point where I'm comfortable making plans, but I still have work to do," ESPN cites Tiger Woods in a statement on Sept. 7. "Whether I can play depends on my continued progress and recovery. My hope is to have my game ready to go.
Currently, Tiger Woods ranks 767th in the official world golf ranking. Last year, he ranked 257th after the Wyndham Championships. ESPN also says that other than the Safeway Open, Tiger Woods hopes to compete in the Turkish Arilines Open next month and the Hero World Challenge Woods' foundation runs on December.
The Turkish Airlines Open commences on Nov. 3-6 in Antalya, Turkey. It's the first of the European Tour events known as "Final Series". In 2013, Woods played the Tournament event and tied for third.
On December 1-4, the 18-player Hero World Challenge event will take place at Albany, in the Bahamas. Tiger Woods will be the tournament's host.
