Last Saturday saw a dreadful event when a couple got caught up in a car crash at the La Raza Ride motorcyle on Coronado Bridge. The victims were Anna Marie and Cruz Elias, of 50 and 52 years respectively.
According to Kusi News, the two lost their lives when a low-ranked drunk navy officer's truck vaulted off the Coronado Bridge, crashing down into the Chicano Park right below. Among the four victims were Anna and Cruz.
The couple was married for 35 years. Both Anna and Cruz made their life's aim to help others, especially children. They became foster parents, opening their doors and house to countless children and their siblings as well who didn't have anywhere to go after their parents died.
Given their semi-retired status, the couple took great joy in going on road trips on their bike. Travelling together made the couple's union stronger than it was ever before. The two would also often take their foster kids to ball games and museums, making sure that they don't miss out on experience they'd have normally.
Jacob, the couple's nephew, found it hard upon himself to express into words how Anna and Cruz's death had an enormously profound impact on the entire family. He added that his aunt and uncle didn't deserve dying at the hands of a suspected drunk driver.
The NBC reported Jacob's interview in which he stated "There are hundreds of people who are crying and aching today because of the poor judgments of one person, so if one thing could be learned today, people in the San Diego area, please stop, think, call a taxi, call a cheap Uber," Jacob pleaded in his shaky voice. "Don't allow another incident like this to happen."
All in all, there should be a strict check and balance of the town drivers as to how their driving records have been throughout the years. Drunk driving has gone rampant these days and should be taken care of by effective government policies. May the family find the patience of bearing a huge loss.
