'Humans' Season 2 Air Date, News & Updates: Synth Drama Series Wasn't Expected To Succeed; New Characters Shift S2

As "Humans" returns to the small screen for a second season, its creators shared that they didn't expect the show would earn much success. Its initial run in August 2015 earned critical praise. The show is a joint project between U.K.'s Channel 4 and U.S. cable channel AMC.

"Humans" creators Sam Vincent and Jon Brackley revealed that they weren't expecting the show to become a hit with the mainstream audience. However, the interesting turn of events worked in favor of the sci-fi series.

"We were hoping to garner a bit of cult appeal and develop a dedicated fan base," said the creators of "Humans" via Express. "But we ended up being something of a mainstream hit."

The drama series explores a world where artificial intelligence or robots called synths are common household and service workers. They eventually come into consciousness on "Humans" Season 1, thus triggering a potential revolution coming from a small band of robots.

The main premise of "Humans" might not be the usual fare viewers look for on television. But then again, it does draw points that highlight what can happen in the real world in the future.

What viewers can expect from "Humans" Season 2 is that interest about the synths will go global as more robots become conscious. "Episode one goes from Berlin to San Francisco and back to the UK," Brackley said. "We find our characters fractured and scattered, but the story will gradually reel them all back together," he added.

"Humans" Season 2 will bring back Mia (Gemma Chan), Niska (Emily Berrington), Leo (Colin Morgan) and Max (Ivanno Jeremiah). The family that took them in to safety in Season 1 -- Joe (Tom Goodman-Hill) and Laura (Katherine Parkinson) -- will still be part of the upcoming season as well.

Meanwhile, "Humans" Season 2 will also bring new character such as Milo Khoury (Marshall Allman) and Dr. Athena Morrow (Carrie-Anne Moss), who are based in the U.S., according to BT. Khoury will play the billionaire from Silicon Valley who recruits Moss' character into his artificial intelligence project.

"Humans" Season 2 debuts in the U.K. via Channel 4 on Sunday, Oct. 30. In the U.S., viewers can expect to watch the series on AMC when it debuts in February 2017. Check out the teaser to the show below.
