LED Lights: Saving Energy But Not Your Eyesight; Study Suggests That It Could Lead To Blindness

LED lights are widely used by homeowners for various reason. Such reason may include but not limited to its endurance, non-filament, energy efficient and environmentally friendly composition. However, reports from expert photo-biologist state LED light's may have hidden risk factors on people's health.

According to Dr. Mercola, the usage of LEDs as a primary indoor light source may have reduced the energy requirements by 95 percent, but it does not generate enough infrared radiation as incandescent lights, which is a factor not to be neglected easily. Dr. Mercola lays emphasis on the requirement of infrared light by a human body.

In an interview with Dr. Alexander Wunsch, who revealed few downsides of LEDs, he highlighted that LED lights can lead to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is the leading cause of blindness in the United States and elsewhere. Other health problems are mitochondrial dysfunction leading to metabolic disorder and then to cancer.

Moreover, the importance of light, specifically the red light from the spectrum, can be used in medical therapy to increase blood circulation. Physicist believes infrared radiation is a thermal waste; however, photo-biologist believe the certain part of the spectrum, which is called near-infrared or infrared-A is very essential.

The said near-infrared is critical for mitochondrial and eye-health. Near-infrared helps prime the cells in the retina for repair and regenerate. LEDs have no infrared radiation and an excess of blue light that generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), this explains why LEDs are so harmful to eyes and overall health.

The importance of proper lighting for individual health should never be overlooked. Light plays a significant role in energy production, thus choosing appropriate lighting should be a priority. One should never sacrifice health over efficiency as claimed by some. But since further test are needed to conclude this initial finding fully, guess we would just have to wait for the definitive advice.
