Fashion magazine, Glamour surprised many with their annual "Women of the Year" list for 2016 because for the first time ever, the list of accomplished and admirable ladies include a man. The first man to make it to the list is the lead vocalist of the band "U2," Bono. Other awardees who are real women include Gwen Stefani, Simone Biles, and Miuccia Prada.
According to an article in Independent, the 56-year old singer was recognized for his humanitarian efforts, especially in his charity one, "Poverty is Sexist" campaign. The said campaign aims to put an end to poverty, a condition which puts many women more vulnerable to abuse.
The editor-in-chief of Glamour, Cindi Leive further explained the decision to include Bono in 2016 "Women of the Year" list. As posted in Spin, Leive said that the magazine has been thinking of adding a man in the list of notable women for years. Leive added that in an effort to present a new way of looking at things, the magazine chose to acknowledge the men who are involve in wonderful cause for the benefit of women.
Although the magazine seemed to have expected the choice of Bono to be revolutionary, it seems that the world is not yet ready for the radical idea. A post from Mediaite claims that the move by Glamour to include Bono in their "Women of the Year" list seems to be gathering negative reactions from people.
Even the English journalist, Susanna Reid frowned at Glamour's choice of Bono during an interview in a TV show, "Good Morning Britain." In an article that appeared in Mirror UK, Susanna Reid said that the Glamour magazine is just looking for attention and controversy by choosing Bono.
