Toddler's Broken Arm Sends Decatur Man To Jail; 'A Forceful Yank' Caused Severe Injury

A 26-year old Decatur man is now in jail with a $300,000 bond for allegedly breaking the upper arm of a toddler. The said injury was incurred when the accused forcibly grabbed the kid from a car.

The severe injury to the one-year-old boy was incurred on Oct. 8 around 5:10 p.m. According to reports, the accused James Senkiw picked the boy up from a car seat in his vehicle by force, grabbing him by his arm and picking him over the seat.

Senkiw admitted it was his fault, according to Decatur police detective Erik Ethell as reported by Herald-Review. It may cause a probable affidavit, he furthered.

Doctors showed the results of spiral fracture to the toddler's left humerus. Spiral fractures are produced from a twisting force that is applied to the bone. Open fractures are usually involved with much more damage to the surrounding muscles, tendons, and ligaments, thus having a higher risk for complications and a longer period of healing, according to Ortho Info..

Ethell continued with the statement of the possible consistent abuse as Doctors have suggested. Dr. Channing Petrak of the Pediatric Resource Center of Peoria described that the toddler demonstrated immense pain when moving his arm.

The child's mother gave a statement to the police by narrating how Senkiw picked up the toddler by grabbing him by one arm, describing such as "a forceful yank." She said that instead of bending down to pick him up, he grabbed her son by his arm and yanks him to himself.

She said though that the boy was fine when she was with him at a birthday party at a fast food restaurant, as surveillance video in the restaurant showed so. Nonetheless, the injury happened after the party, and everything was messed up.

Senkiw, on the other hand, explained the incident by saying that he pulled the child "out of the vehicle by his left arm because the front seat is bulky. He said that it became hard to get back to the rear seat of his two-door extended cab GMC truck. The accused also said that frequently grabs him by his upper left arm. He said he even grabs the young boy and lifts him about two feet in the air.

Senkiw is booked into the Macon County Jail and is facing two counts of aggravated battery of a child and one count each of aggravated domestic battery and reckless conduct. His preliminary hearing will be on Nov. 9.
