Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao won title belt via unanimous decision on his comeback fight against former world champion Jessie Vargas. As he reclaims for the third time the World Boxing Organization welterweight title, Pacquiao does not dismiss the possibility that the fans may see a rematch between him and his bitter rival Mayweather.
As the previous fight was somehow met with criticisms with fans saying it was boring and, at the very least, calculated, the new possibility of a Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch makes fans hopeful in seeing a barrage of punches from the two boxers the next time they meet in the ring.
During the fight against Vargas, Pacquiao demonstrated that he still has "it" - his trademark speed and power. Despite a 10-year age gap and a clear reach advantage, Pacquiao systematically destroyed Vargas' defense and has landed a powerful blow early on in the match at the Thomas & Mack Center. The crowd of 16,231 witnessed how the match was very much one sided. With a short right-handed counterpunch, he knocked Vargas down on the ring. Despite this, Pacquiao revealed that although he was trying to knock him down every round, he cannot afford to be careless as well.
With an impressive record of 59 wins, 2 draws, and 38 knockouts, Pacquiao has proved to the world once again that he still has what it takes to be the pound-for-pound king. The judges score at the end of the bout was 118-109, 118-109, and 114-113, in favor of Pacquiao.
Pacquiao snatched the WBO title in 2010 for the first time after beating Miguel Cotto and lost it to Timothy Bradley two years later, but got it back after winning his rematch against Bradley in 2014. Floyd Mayweather, who was there to personally witness the match, took the title from Pacquiao last year.
With an invitation from Pacquiao himself, Mayweather took a front row seat to see the event. "Yes I invited him to come tonight," Pacquiao said. When he was asked if there's a possibility of a rematch between him and Mayweather, his response was: "We will see."
