On Saturday night, boxing champ Manny Pacquiao proved to the world that he is still capable of delivering exciting and worth-watching fights to boxing fans around the world.
Taking the title from his 27-year-old opponent Jessie Vargas, boxing champ Pacquiao secured a unanimous decision win from the judges at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The final score was 118-109, 118-109, 114-113 in favor of the senator from Sarangani Province, the Philippines.
Fans of the boxing champ took to Twitter and posted highlights of Pacman’s fight, with other even congratulating him for the win.
The boxing champ Pacquiao’s opponent Jessie Vargas held up his own, however never backing down from a relentless onslaught by the boxing champ Pacquiao and even firing powerful shots that stung the new champion a couple of ties.
An early knockdown was scored when boxing champ Pacquiao put Vargas on the seat of his pants in the second but failed to seal the deal until the closing bell of the twelfth.
Apparently, age was not a hindrance for boxing champ Pacquiao who, at 47, still showed the brilliance that wowed many fans since breaking into the international boxing scene. However, the Pacman of old that we have come to know, the Pacman that can end a fight with one single punch may very well be gone.
Instead, the new Pacman is an intelligent, just as quick, and still powerful fighter who can put his opponents to sleep if they don’t do their homework. All in all, the fight was a very exciting one with both fighters capable of knocking the other out. In the end, boxing champ Pacquiao outlasted a still feisty Vargas in all aspects of the game with some fuel to spare and left the 27-year-old Vargas with a swollen eye and bloody face.
The boxing champ Pacquiao’s fellow Filipino pug Nonito Donaire didn’t fare so well though as he put up a disappointing performance against Jessie Magdaleno and losing his WBO Super Bantamweight along the way.
Donaire started out slow, appearing to measure the quick Magdaleno and got caught with several big blows in the second and third rounds. An accidental head-butt in the fourth put Magdaleno on the defensive to protect the cut which Donaire didn’t miss out on. But Magdaleno’s corner did a good job of taking care of the cut and the proud fighter from Las Vegas rebounded in the seventh with a renewed ferocity to take back control of the fight all the way to the twelfth.
With the boxing champ beating his opponent Jessie Vargas and secure the WBO welterweight championship belt, is a Floyd Mayweather rematch going to be announced soon? A few days before the fight, in an interview, CBS Chairman Allan Fox believes this is likely to happen. Perhaps, announcements will be flying in soon. And Mayweather better be ready for a rematch against the boxing champ Pacquiao.
