While the Dallas Cowboys are currently enjoying a solid 6-1 record this season with rookie quarterback, Dak Prescott filling in for the injured Tony Romo. With the exceptional performance of Prescott in the season, the Cowboys are rumored to be in talks with the New York Jets to trade Romo for Defensive lineman, Sheldon Richardson. The Jets are holding a 3-5 record in the season.
In recent trade rumors, the Cowboys and Jets were previously speculated to be discussing a swap involving Cowboys' Romo for Jets' quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick. However, the latest trade rumors suggest Richardson as the player to be traded instead of Fitzpatrick.
In a report by ESPN, it is stated that the Jets called the Cowboys to see if they were interested in acquiring the service of Richardson. Richardson is a former NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
According to Headlines & Global News however, the Jets are reportedly looking for a high future draft pick from the Cowboys. This means that a trade involving Romo and Richardson is unlikely. Additionally, the Cowboys have second thoughts in obtaining Richardson because of the remaining contracts he has with the Jets.
Richardson is allegedly going to make $8.069 million in the next season. This may be hard for the Cowboys to absorb, but according to Fansided, the Cowboys can opt to either rework Romo's contract, or trade him to free up cap space.
Another option for the Cowboys to clear some cap space is to let go of linebacker, Rolando McClain. Discharging McClain would free up $1.9 million on the Cowboys' salary cap.
So far this season, Richardson has 28 tackles and 1.5 sacks. In his rookie year in 2013, Richardson set a career high 77 tackles.
