"Final Fantasy XV" will not be having playable female characters at launch. But the development team behind Square Enix's latest installment is taking it into consideration and might add them in future DLCs.
In an interview with Jeuxvideo, Sawatari Yoshiharu, the man responsible for the development for "Final Fantasy XV's" DLCs, mentioned the possibility of adding playable heroines to the game if there is ample demand for it.
Those who have played or followed the majority of the "Final Fantasy" series will note that there have always been playable heroines in the games. Players will recall some of the most iconic characters of the series such as "FFVII's" Tifa and Aerith, "FFX's" Yuna, and the more recent "FFXIII's" main protagonist Lightning.
"Final Fantasy" games from way back during the 8-bit era up to the most recent installments have always had a mix of playable male and female characters. "Final Fantasy XV" will be the first of the series to not have a playable female character.
Although this hasn't been much of an issue for some players, for most players it has been a de facto standard in the series and having this gameplay element missing in "Final Fantasy XV" could be a little disappointing.
Most of the game trailers we have seen so far hint at Noctis, the main protagonist of "Final Fantasy XV", along with a group of three other guys as the playable characters. If the gameplay is anything near to that of "Final Fantasy XIII", then it's possible that we'll be playing as Noctis and have the other characters doing support roles.
The female characters we have seen in the "Final Fantasy XV's" movie "Kingsglaive" and game trailers might only appear in cut-scenes and perhaps as helpful NPCs. We are hopeful, however, that future DLCs will change that and there will be enough demand for playable female characters to make it so.
"Final Fantasy XV" will be released worldwide on November 29 for the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.
