Cries for #Calexit has taken over the Internet. Mere hours after Donald Trump won the US Presidential race, wheels are being set in motion to have the State of California declared an independent country by 2019. The move is already being backed by angel investors and prominent names in Silicon Valley. If this move pushes through, California will be the sixth strongest economy in the world.
With #Calexit, California, which ranks sixth in the world in terms of Gross Domestic Product, can become an independent country and effectively remove itself from Trump's control. Californians have gathered at the capitol in Sacramento to express willingness to secede from the US and Trump's presidency.
Marketwatch explained that #Calexit is possible. California just needs to hold a referendum in 2019 on the petition that it be declared an independent nation. "According to Yes, California, the state could legally secede if an amendment was proposed and approved by two-thirds of the House of Representatives and Senate. If passed, it would be sent to each state legislature to be considered and would need to be accepted by at least 38 of the 50 states to be adopted," the report read.
The #Calexit movement is already being backed by people with very deep pockets. Hyperloop One co-founder Shervin Pishevar, who was also one of Uber's early investors, confirmed his mission to make a "New California." According to Business Insider, this move is supported by prominent Silicon Valley innovators. Among them are Marc Hemeon from Google and Design Inc. and Dave Morin who founded Path, a private social networking tool. Pro-secession site Yes California is actively campaigning for #Calexit and already accepting donations.
"In 2016, the United Kingdom voted to leave the international community with their 'Brexit' vote. Our 'Calexit' referendum is about California joining the international community. You have a big decision to make," Marketwatch quoted the site.
In the meantime, hundreds of protests and school walkouts happened almost simultaneously across different cities and states.
