Wedding trends in China have taken the word extravagance to a whole new level. It seems the norm in China now is having the brides don four wedding dress, treat their guests to giant carousel cakes and have over top entertainment rivaling shows in Las Vegas in their wedding receptions. At an exorbitant cost, of course.
Planning a simple wedding has women turning into a bridezilla, what would happen to the bride if she has to plan a $31-million-dollar wedding?Well, wealthy women in China knows. In recent years, it has been a trend for wealthy families to throw extravagant and sometimes over-the-top weddings for their children.
If you don't believe it, just ask Angelababy, a Chinese actress and so-called Kim Kardashian of China, had the $31-million-dollar wedding. The wedding preparations started with a pre-wedding photo shoot for Angelababy and her then-fiance in Paris, France where the bride-to-be don a slew of Elie Saab Haute Couture wedding gowns. The pre-wedding photos were displayed at the Shanghai Exhibition Center, 200,000 square foot venue, where 2,000 guests were in attendance.
The wedding venue was lavishly decorated in a romantic fairy tale theme abundant with pink and purple flowers. An image of a castle was projected throughout the venue and continued with the couple's wedding cake that boasted a layer of a rotating carousel in the design.
Just like Kim Kardashian, Angelababy is also a fashionista. She wore a custom designed Christian Dior gown that took 5 months to make. The groom also wore a made-to-measure Tom Ford tuxedo. The guest went home with mobile phones among other souvenirs.
Angelababy's wedding was a year ago and according to the author of "Crazy Rich Asian", Kevin Kwan, her wedding was just tame compared to real rich Asian families where the wedding lasts for a week and have guests privately flown from all over the world. There was even one wedding where the family rented three hotels and had a star-studded wedding concert! According to Kevin Kwan, these weddings could cost up to $50 to $70 million dollars!
It seems like the wedding industry of China can comfortably sustain a small nation. But with such costs, do the couple live happily ever after? Many are criticizing such extravagance but in the Chinese culture, which remains highly patriarchal, the show of wealth is the sign that they can support their daughter or son and this show of wealth can help obtain their child an equal status in the marriage.
What do you think? Are you curious too on what it feels like to just attend such an extravagant wedding? If you have the money, would you choose to spend it on a lavish and extravagant wedding or will you choose a simple one? What's important is you find true love and happiness, right?
