"True Detective" is one of those shows that have generated huge media buzz as it goes along. However, the praises Season 1 got from critics and viewers alike weren't anything like the criticisms Season 2 received. Now, viewers are wondering whether the HBO series will come back for a third season and fortunately, a network executive shared some update about "True Detective" Season 3 renewal.
HBO programming chief Casey Bloys said that the crew is "thinking about ideas, and when they find something," that's when he will be informed, Entertainment Weekly reported. Bloys added that the team is "thinking about what the "best-next version" of "True Detective" is.
The well-received Season 1 starred Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as Martin Hart and Rust Cohle, respectively. It makes sense that the "True Detective" crew is being careful about the show's future given the negative reviews for Season 2, which was headlined by Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn.
Former HBO programming president Michael Lombardo shouldered the blame for the lackluster reception of "True Detective" Season 2. He said that series creator Nic Pizzolatto was rushed due to the deadlines and pressures of network television and Season 2 wasn't given enough time to get properly ready, Den of Geek reported. Regardless, both "True Detective" seasons got impressive ratings, with more than 11 million viewers watching per episode on average, according to IndieWire.
Bloys said in July that "True Detective" "is not dead" but a take on Season 3 from Pizzolatto is non-existent yet, Vulture reported. Bloys added that Pizzolatto is busy in other projects, which could be the "Perry Mason" reboot on HBO that also involves Robert Downey Jr.
Pizzolatto has signed an overall deal with HBO in late 2015. The deal puts him in commitment with the network until 2018 but also allows him to be involved in other projects.
However, it's possible that HBO won't wait for Pizzolatto's Season 3 story pitch and hire another writer and bring in a new showrunner, while Pizzolatto remains as an executive producer. Bloys said that Pizzolatto's deal with HBO allows that, and the network is on-board with that scenario. But Pizzolatto can also write the entirety of "True Detective" Season 3 by himself like what happened in previous seasons.
What do you think about the possibility of "True Detective" returning for Season 3? Should Pizzolatto remain as the show's writer or appoint someone else for the task? Share your thoughts below.
