Watch Out Dieters: Weight Watchers Frozen Desserts Recalled for Death-Causing Bacteria

Losing weight can be hard but it doesn't have to be deadly. The FDA recently released a recall notice on Weight Watchers Smart One's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Sundae for bacteria contamination of one of its ingredient.

The culprit behind this recall is Aspen Hills Inc, the supplier for the contaminated cookie dough pieces in the sundae. The FDA confirmed that an ingredient within the frozen dessert has been tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that could cause fatal infections.

While the bacteria may induce short-term symptoms such as high fever and nausea, the bacteria can also cause serious health issues such as miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. So far, there are no consumer complaints lodged against the frozen dessert. For further information about the recall, check FDA's website for more details about the product.

If the name Aspen Hills Inc. sounds familiar, it is because the company had recently caused many problems for ice cream companies for its Listeria-contaminated cookie dough pieces. Last September, ice cream company Blue Bell recalled two cookie dough ice cream flavors from ten states, thanks to Aspen Hills Inc.

But the damage Aspen Hills Inc. have caused is far from over. Food Safety News recently reported that a whopping five ice cream brands connected to Aspen Hills Inc. have recalled their cookie dough flavors due to Listeria contaminations. Among those five are popular brand names such as Cedar Crest and Blue Bunny.

Clocking in at only 140 calories per serving, Weight Watchers Smart One's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Sundae is a healthy low-fat option for ice cream desserts. Described on Weight Watchers Smart Ones' website as "low-fat cookie-flavored ice cream over a crunchy cookie crust topped with fudge sauce", it is a popular meal among the Weight Watchers faithful.

Celebrities in Hollywood has long touted Weight Watchers as a great low-calorie diet regime and some have been life-long followers because Weight Watchers offer a healthy alternative to their guilty pleasure desserts. But with Listeria on the rise in the ice cream industry, it's best to ditch cookie dough ice creams from your diet entirely.

What do you think? Will you risk it anyway just so you could indulge in your favorite ice cream? Leave a comment below.
