'Baywatch' Movie Cast: 1990s TV Reboot Includes Zac Efron, Dwayne Johnson; 2017 Release Date [Rumors]

Red trunks has been synonymous with "Baywatch," a TV show that aired in the '90s starring David Hasselhoff. Now, it has been confirmed that a movie adaptation of the show has been set, and actor Zac Efron is touted to wear the famous red trunks for the big screen version, Variety has learned.

According to Variety, Efron is already in negotiations to join the film, and if he says yes, he will be starring opposite Dwayne Johnson.

While originally a drama and action series in the small screen, the movie will be a comedy this time around, with Seth Gordon ("Horrible Bosses") behind the camera. Johnson is also the producer of the movie under his Seven Bucks Production outfit. His big participation in the development of "Baywatch" was announced back in October 2014, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Also hopping aboard as producers are Beau Flynn, Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Greg Bonnan, the news outlet stated. Damian Shannon and Mark Swift have been asked write the script for the movie, which will begin production by February 2016, according to a separate report from The Hollywood Reporter.

The report also said that the "Baywatch" movie has been in development for years. The first drafts of the script present a story about a straight-forward lifeguard (Johnson) who partners, against his wishes, with someone described as a "young rule-flouting hothead" (Efron). Together, however, they team up to fight an oil tycoon, who threatens to destroy the beach.

The report also analyzed Efron's casting, saying that that the former Disney child star had attained much success in the type of genre the "Baywatch" film would like to ride on.

According to Variety, Efron's 2014 movie, "Neighbors," earned a whopping $150.2 million in the U.S. and $268.2 million worldwide.

In announcing Efron's possible participation in the movie, Johnson posted a tweet welcoming him to the cast. "BIG NEWS: Welcoming my dude @ZacEfron to #BAYWATCH. Our movie will be big, fun and RATED R.. Like me when I drink," the former Wrestling star wrote.

In response, Zac also sent a tweet to Dwayne, saying that he's stoked about being part of the film.
