Will good friends and neighbors Philip and Stan on "The Americans" finally have a confrontation in the upcoming season? The FBI agent (Stan) should be close to figuring out that his neighbors are KGB operatives based on what transpired with FBI office secretary, Martha (Alison Wright), who has ties with Philip.
Since Martha has been sent away in Russia by the KGB in the last season of "The Americans," it's unclear if her character will make an appearance in Season 5. The actress playing her has already booked a new show as well.
Matthew Rhys, who plays Philip Jennings on "The Americans" wants his character and Stan (Noah Emmerich) to have a big standoff already. His relationship with his friend has placed Philip on the edge quite a number of times as Stan might figure out their real identity soon, along with his wife Elizabeth (Keri Russell). "You can't fool Stan this long, you know what I mean?" the actor said, via Vulture.
But Matthew Rhys also has this idea that instead of turning over Philip and Elizabeth to the FBI after the confrontation in "The Americans," Stan could work with them and turn them against the KGB. "Then, they betray Stan again to become triple agents," he added.
Of course, this is only what the actor wants to happen to his character and could have no bearing on what the writers have envisioned. "The Americans" is already halfway done with filming Season 5 at this point. The show is expected to return on air in early 2017.
Meanwhile, "The Americans" producers have indicated that the fate of Martha (Alison Wright), who was sent to Russia to ensure that Philip doesn't get caught, will be revealed in Season 5. "Martha is not dead, and there's good reports from Gabriel (Frank Langella) about how she's doing," confirmed executive producer Joe Fields, via Deadline.
Whether Martha will be physically seen in "The Americans" Season 5 is still not known. What's certain is that Alison Wright has recently been cast as a series regular on "Feud" for FX, according to Yahoo.
