"Frozen 2" co-director, Chris Buck, has finally confirmed a theory that was thrown last year about the connection between "Frozen" and another Disney film, "Tarzan."
In an interview with MTV News, Buck clarified what he meant when co-director, Jennifer Lee, shared his thoughts about Anna and Elsa's parents. Last year, when Lee had her AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Reddit, she said that Buck didn't subscribe to the idea that the king and queen of Arendrell died on a boat at the height of a storm. Instead, Buck suggested that, "They got washed up on a shore in a jungle island. The queen gave birth to a baby boy. They build a treehouse. They get eaten by a leopard..."
That story strikes a chord for anyone who loves Disney animation as it is the story of "Tarzan." Incidentally, Buck also directed that movie.
In talking to MTV News, Buck said that, in his own world, it's really what he believes in. "When you're working on a feature, you have a lot of time to think about stuff because it takes four years to make one," he told MTV.
He further said that following Anna and Elsa's parents being killed by leopards, "Their baby boy is raised by gorillas. So in my little head, Anna and Elsa's brother is Tarzan - but on the other side of that island are surfing penguins, to tie in a non-Disney movie, 'Surf's Up.' That's my fun little world."
The tie-in is not officially a Disney story but Buck said that, in true Disney fashion, people can believe whatever they want to believe about the backstory of "Frozen."
Meanwhile, the director also hinted that the sequel will still be about the bond between the two sisters. "We have two very strong female leads in Frozen. We will keep that going in the next one. We will tackle other issues that, I think, are out there today that boys and girls, men and women, are dealing with," he told MTV in another interview with MTV News.
Buck also said that fans of the movie will be seeing a different Elsa this time around, as she learns to have fun again after her emotional journey in the first movie. Traces of this "new" Elsa was already seen in the short story, "Frozen Fever," which was released this year. "That's what was really good about the short -- we could have fun with Elsa. And that personality... you will see in the next one," Buck said through Fandango.
In March, Disney confirmed that "Frozen 2" is happening, according to Variety, but its theater date has not yet been announced.
