There are only a handful of fighting games with the ability to make gamers rage and cut their consoles (or arcade joysticks) in half. There's the Street Fighter franchise and its new fifth version, with producer Yoshinori Ono promising a surprise in the upcoming Capcom Cup 2016 in December. But for fans of the genre, something is still missing.
Word has it that developers of Marvel Vs. Capcom, the immensely popular crossover fighting game that pits popular heroes of both universes, is coming up with the title's fourth installment. Polygon said that a number of sources are pointing to Marvel Vs. Capcom 4 as one of the highlights of 2017, while its unveiling will be in conjunction with Sony's PlayStation Experience this week. The event will also showcase the aforementioned competition featuring Street Fighter 5.
Although Capcom has yet to formally announce the arrival and/or development of Marvel Vs. Capcom 4, those familiar with the matter are saying that the game will "heavily" feature characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or more popularly known as MCU. These include superheroes from Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers such as "Ant-Man and Groot", as per IGN. Unfortunately, fans of the X-Men will be quite disappointed since the game won't carry any of Xavier's students and their rivals.
Since 1994's X-Men: Children of the Atom, Capcom has always included the popular mutants in their roster. This streak stretched to X-Men Vs. Street Fighter and the Marvel Vs. Capcom franchise. Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom, which was released in November 2011 even featured names such as, among others, Doctor Strange, Rocket Raccoon and Ghost Rider. Resident Evil's Nemesis T-Type, Vergil from Devil May Cry and Strider Hiryu were likewise playable characters, alongside Jill Valentine and Shuma-Gorath as DLC heroes.
In a separate interview, Marvel Games Vice President Jay Ong told Polygon that they love their fans and "we certainly want to please them", but they can only say so much about an upcoming Marvel Vs. Capcom title. Ong, however, is still open on the possibility of giving fans a fourth title.
