Electronic Arts (EA) recently announced that it plans to shelve "Battlefield," one of its best-selling game franchises, for a couple of years. The move was done so that they can focus on adding more content on the new "Star Wars Battlefront" game to be released late next year.
According to IGN, EA games announced the news during the Nasdaq Investor programme, saying that they will instead focus on addressing the feedback they received from the first "Star Wars Battlefront" game. "Star Wars Battlefront" had generally positive reviews when it launched last year, but lack of content was one of the game's main issues.
EA Games also plans to make use of elements from "Star Wars: Episode 8" to add more content on the new "Star Wars Battlefront" game, as per Videogamer's report. "Star Wars Episode 8" is scheduled to hit theaters on December 15,2017.
In the previous "Star Wars Battlefront" game, EA Games was not able to utilize new materials from "Star Wars: Episode 7" because the game came out earlier than the movie. But in the new "Star Wars Battlefront," EA games will be free to utilize elements and characters from the new movies of the "Star Wars" saga. No exact release date of the new "Star Wars Battlefront" was mentioned yet.
EA Games is not the only game publisher that announced to put their best-selling games on standby. Early this year, Ubisoft announced that there will be no new "Assassin's Creed" game in 2016, and the possibility of no "Far Cry" game in 2017. An "Assassin's Creed" movie, however, is coming out to Theaters on December 21, 2016.
In IGN's report, they mention that game developers' decision to shelve the long-standing game franchises is a move to help ease players and developers from "gamer fatigue" or when marketing begins to heavily influence the creative process of developing games.
