There's plenty in store when "Supergirl" returns for its midseason run beginning Monday, Jan. 16, 2017. Primarily, the show will be introducing a new villain Mxyzptlk, who is known as Superman's longtime enemy.
Does this mean "Supergirl" will see the return of Superman? Will Cat Grant also come back? What about the possibility of Power Girl's appearance? "Supergirl" is going to be packed with stories when it's back and there's even a musical crossover with "The Flash" to look forward to. Here's what's coming up in the show in the midseason.
The arrival of Mxyzptlk is definitely happening. The character, whose casting has not yet been announced as of press time, is a known trickster who used to mess up Superman's plans. He was already featured in shows like "Smallville," "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," and "The Adventures of Superboy," IGN reports.
Speculation are that Mxyzptlk's appearance could also bring Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) back, but producers haven't confirmed this. Other assumptions are that Mxyzptlk will figure as the villain in the show's musical crossover with "The Flash," as Comic Book suggests it has happened in the original source materials before.
Meanwhile, fans are eager to see Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) back as well, but the verdict is still unclear on this. According to TV Guide, Cat Grant will have to return if only to give closure to the fact that she knows Supergirl is her assistant Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist).
In October, the producers told Entertainment Weekly that they have to work out Calista Flockhart's schedule, which means she's still part of the show despite the reduced appearance. "We love working with Calista and Calista loves the show, which is why she came back to do this," executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said.
Meanwhile, with Supergirl now holding the key to other universes as revealed in the crossover episodes, there's now a strong possibility for Power Girl to appear. The character is Supergirl in an alternate universe.
Kreisberg said that the writers have yet to discuss this storyline, but acknowledged that there is no stopping them now. "There's literally no limit to the things that we could do," said Kreisberg, according to another Comic Book report.
