'The Mummy' News And Updates: Alex Kurtzman Talks About Film's Saga, Announces 'Dracula Untold' Not Part Of Universal Monster Reboot

Alex Kurtzman is the director of "The Mummy" and he talked about the flick and some details to entice fans to see it once it hits theaters. He also talked about "Dracula Untold" not being part of the Universal monster reboot.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kurtzman talked about what to expect. "The Mummy" is the first ever film that is quite different from the original trilogy by Brenda Fraser that was released 84 years ago. "The Mummy" will be out in theaters on June 9 next year and it will star Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella.

"The Mummy" also stars Russell Crowe as Henry Jekyll. Kurtzman showed extended clips from "The Mummy" before the trailer was released over the weekend and the character Henry Jekyll was featured in most of them. He is the mysterious scientist who operates a place called Prodigium.

In the trailer, Cruise's character was seen dying then coming back to life and Kurtzman explained the logic behind that. He shared that Cruise always saves the day in the movies he has been doing in the past so Kurtzman said that they have talked about taking away the fundamental challenge that the actor will be solving the problem. He said that when Cruise's character, Nick Morton, comes back to life, he will have no idea about what is happening so the notion that he knows what he is doing will no longer be part of "The Mummy."

When asked about making "The Mummy" in the modern day, Kurtzman said that it is different from the original trilogy. He noted that it is just not about a villainous figure but there is something deeper and a wider story. He also said that "The Mummy" is different this time because the Mummy is a woman.

As for "Dracula Untold" being part of the Universal Monsters, Science Fiction reported that Kurtzman said that there are no plans for making a new movie from the original flick yet. Rumors are swirling claiming that "Dracula Untold" might be merged with "Van Helsing."
