Dev Patel, the Indian-origin actor who immediately gained popularity on his performance on "Slumdog Millionaire" a film by Danny Boyle, was offered the role of Prince Zuko for M. Night Shyamalan's 2010 "The Last Airbender".
After many years since the film was released, Dev Patel speaks about his not-so-good experience in M. Night Shyamalan's movie. According to an article by The Hollywood Reporter, Patel referred to himself as a stranger on screen when he watched himself on the said film. It was an experience that really changed his mindset about Hollywood and the roles he would accept in the future.
When "The Last Airbender" was announced, Avatar fans had high hopes if not excited for the movie but then when it was finally released the audience was extremely disappointed and the movie was greatly criticized. It was also in this film that Dev Patel gained a nomination for a worst supporting actor award, as reported by Yahoo Movies UK.
Because of this, the 26-year-old actor Dev Patel learned to say no the hard way and admitted in an interview that he is afraid to take roles on big studio movies. His experience on M. Night Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender" made him feel like he was being side-stepped and got extremely overwhelmed by it.
Moreover, Patel was not the only one who felt bad talking about the movie, creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko also opted not to acknowledge the project because of the embarrassment that came with it. However, director Shyamalan felt otherwise saying in an interview with IGN, that he made the movie with kids in mind and emphasized that there were, in fact, many people who liked the movie.
