The new trailer for "The Circle" has just been released, featuring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson as the lead stars for the upcoming movie adaptation of Dave Eggers' best-selling novel. However, it has also been reported last year that Alicia Vikander has signed on to play Watson's role.
"The Circle" is a sci-fi thriller which features Mae Holland (played by Emma Watson), a fresh college graduate working for a tech company The Circle. Eamon Bailey (played by Tom Hanks) runs this tech company at Silicon Valley. Apparently, this dream job Mae has landed on turns out be her worst nightmare.
"The Circle" director James Ponsoldt described Mae to be a struggling individual, trying to find meaning and purpose for her life. Mae has a lot of questions lingering in her mind and she is frustrated for not being able to get answers.
On the other hand, Eamon is known for being a visionary leader. His passion for knowledge is so overwhelming, promoting the importance of knowing everything. He is generous with his knowledge as well, he believes the value of imparting his experiences to everyone and encourages his people to maximize their potentials. The downside is that, his passion to push everyone to excel can even become destructive as well.
Mae thought that getting her dream job will satisfy her and end her struggles, however, things become complicated when Mae gets involved with The Circle's product, SeeChange camera, a wireless, glass, eyeball-size camera that can transmit actual footages. Initially, Mae was hired to work as a customer representative in The Circle, but things changed when she began sharing her life on social media using the SeeChange camera, detailing her day-to-day activities and even to the extent of sharing her life's secrets, fears and ambitions. Mae became an instant virtual celebrity as millions of people watches her live streaming on the online site of The Circle.
Director Ponsoldt shared that the movie "The Circle" will emphasize on the extent of control technology has over people, and how people should value the importance of their privacy. Ponsoldt also told USA TODAY that viewers will leave the theaters relating with Mae and with a disturbed mind, thinking about how social media has affected or controlled their lives.
In another report, Alicia Vikander has been reported to have signed on to play the role of Mae in "The Circle." Slashfilm has posted the announcement last May 2015. It seems that Alicia Vikander was the first choice to portray Mae, however, the trailer now reveals Emma Watson has filmed the lead role.
