Sony’s ‘Project Field’, A Bold Move Into Mobile Gaming Through Card Games?

Sony's Project Field is one of the company's first entry into the mobile game industry. The project's main goal is to bring another card platform to cell phones.

Sony's Project Field is developed by Forward Works Co. Ltd which is a new division created by Sony. in collaboration with Level 5, Inc. and Bandai Co., involves some kind of platform which can be connected to a tablet or smartphone. Project Field is made up of cards, pad, and game application. Project Field reads the cards position, orientation and movement of the card by connecting the pad via Bluetooth, based on Sony's website.

Project Field's main features includes the pad capability, IC chips are built into the cards which enable the software to read and write cards, and It can also play with two pads connected to one smartphone, it can correspond to various ways of enjoying, such as game play by multiple people and games requiring many cards. The first game in development is "Yo-Kai Watch" which is based on the Japanese Manga of the same name.

ForwardWorks aims to deliver users with the opportunity to casually enjoy full-fledged game titles in the new field of the smart device market. The company was launched on April 1, 2016, with the main purpose of bringing quality games to smart device users in Japan and Asia. Project Field is going to be the first project which involves an accessory or peripheral in order to play the game. The company has already announced that they are porting in PlayStation Games into the mobile platform with Hot Shots Golf launching in spring 2017. Other titles include "Arc the Lad" and Wild Arms" RPG series.

Sony's ForwardWorks could be the missing link that will finally unite all gaming platforms. With the current innovations presented by the company, there is no doubt that the future of mobile gaming is in for a treat.
