Andrew Garfield Talks Losing A Lot Of Weight For 'Silence' Flick; Reveals How He Is Recovering From Starvation, Dieting

Andrew Garfield is now recovering from his starvation and his dieting as he prepared for his role on "Silence." The actor dropped 40 pounds for the flick.

Garfield plays the role of a Jesuit missionary on "Silence" and the actor said that it was both eye-opening while he was filming the flick and relieving that the filming has wrapped up as he is now able to re-emerge from isolation.

In an interview with People, Garfield said that he gave himself a lot of rewards after the starvation and dieting. He noted that losing the weight was a journey into the mindset of his character and did not think of it as a burden. He noted that the experience of fasting and starvation was an amazing opportunity as it revealed to him that there was really scarcity in terms of food in the island and the villagers are restricted when it comes to their sources of food.

"Silence" is a film by Martin Scorsese and it was based on the 1966 novel of the same name, which was panned by Shusaku Endo. Garfield and Adam Driver's characters travel to Japan to locate their missing mentor, who is played by Liam Neeson, Cinema Blend reported. During the time that the story took place, Christianity and priests were banned.

"Silence" was shot in Taiwan and Garfield noted that it is culturally different from what he was used to since he was away from the people he loves as well as the things he used to enjoy. He noted that he isolated himself as much as possible because doing such gave him so much clarity about what was important to him and in his life.

Garfield noted that after filming "Silence," he celebrated his self-imposed confinement by driving along the California coast. He said that there was a lot to unpack and a lot to give thanks for.

A limiter release of "Silence" is this Friday, December 23. A wider release is set for January 6.
