Tension has existed in the marriage of Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) for many years because of the nature of their job as Russian spies. But when "The Americans" Season 5 returns, viewers can expect a stronger partnership between the characters on the domestic front.
According to showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, the Jennings' marriage will be in a "good place" despite the challenges. They told Entertainment Weekly that Philip and Elizabeth have tough times ahead but there's always that strong connection between them that will keep them together.
Leading double lives as KGB spies pretending to be a normal family in America has its consequences, as "The Americans" have shown for the last four seasons. "They're going to be tested, as usual," Weisberg said. "They're in a good place, but will they stay in that good place?" he teased.
One of the tests in their marriage was the presence of Martha (Alison Wright) whom Philip had to "marry" as another person to further his missions with the KGB. In the last season, Philip and Elizabeth had to help Martha get out of America as her life is in danger after she realized she married a spy. They shipped her to Russia where she knows no one else and her fate is uncertain.
The producers say that Martha will be "off the grid" in "The Americans" Season 5. But in a previous interview with TV Line, Fields confirmed that the character has not been killed off. "That's something to hold on to," he said, hinting that she could still be back on the show.
Viewers are still waiting on the announcement for the premiere of "The Americans" Season 5 on FX. But the show is in the midst of filming and has been renewed until the sixth and final season. Check back to this site for more of the announcements and updates about the series.
