A grandmother was held responsible in the overdose of her one-year-old grandchild. The baby overdosed from Methadone, confirmed Calvert County Sheriff's office.
The child showed symptoms of poisoning and was under the care of the grandmother at the latter's home. The child was taken to Calvert Memorial Hospital on Thursday after his mother picked him up from his grandmother's house and he was then given Naloxone.
The child, who remained unidentified, was taken to MedStar Georgetown University Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. He was also monitored for cardiac and respiratory issues. He remained in critical and acute status.
The incident took place on Feb. 9. The child was taken by his mother to the hospital after he appeared to be non-responsive. It was not stated what other signs did the child exhibit as to why his mother inferred he was poisoned. The Child Protective Services then called the Calver County Sheriff's Office to report the incident, CBS News reported.
The grandmother was charged with first-degree child abuse, first-degree assault, and distribution of a controlled dangerous substance, according to The Washington Post. The circumstances related to the incident remained unclear as it is unknown how the child got hold of the substance and if it was properly sealed or kept out of reach of children by the grandmother.
Last year, another case of a grandmother feeding methadone, which is an opioid medication, to her grandchild was reported. The woman, 48, is from Whitinsville and she said she kept her methadone in baby bottles. During that time, she visited her daughter in Lincoln, Nebraska and woke up at around 1:30 a.m. to feed her grandson. However, she grabbed the wrong bottle and fed methadone to the baby.
The grandmother was charged with child abuse. Her 14-month-old grandson was nearly killed in the incident. Later, she said she lied to take the fall for her daughter.
