Even with an R-rating, "Deadpool" garnered great success - so don't be surprised to see more superhero movies get the same rating. In fact, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," which stars Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, recently received an R rating as well.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the Zack Snyder-directed film will still be PG-13 when it hits theatres on March 25. However, its extended DVD version, once it hits the market, will feature bonus scenes, prompting the Motion Picture Association of America to give "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" a restricted rating.
The board announced the news on Wednesday, through a bulletin posting on the official website of the Classification & Rating Administration. The "Ultimate Edition" received the rating due to "sequences of violence" that aren't included in the theatrical cut.
It is still unknown as to how much bonus scenes will be added to the theatrical cut of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," which already spans 2 hours and 31 minutes.
"Warner Bros. and Snyder certainly knew that the additional scenes would mean an R rating," says Pamela McClintock of The Hollywood Reporter. "Insiders say the decision to submit the extended version was made before 'Deadpool' opened to a massive $152.2 million over the long Presidents Day weekend earlier this month for Fox and star Ryan Reynolds."
The ratings board previously gave the shorter version of "Dawn of Justice" a PG-13 rating back in September for "intense sequences of violence and action throughout, and some sensuality."
"Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.
