A mom-of-one reduced her monthly shopping bills from £400 to less than £200 by feeding her family with food that past the best before date. The extremely thrifty mom said it's a strategy every parent should do to save money at the same time reduce food waste.
Gina Phillips, 40, and her partner Matt Bird, 36, started watching their every penny after they relocated from Lytham St Annes in Lancashire to Stone in Staffordshire for Matt's job. Gina then decided to quit her well-paid job to take care of their daughter, Lily, who is now two-and-half years old.
With Matt's £35,000 salary, Gina realized they were finding it hard to make ends meet. Hence, the thrifty mom started on thinking of better ways to save money, including buying food that past the best before date. Since then the thrifty mom has been hitting the supermarkets first thing in the morning or shortly before closing to find the items she needs -- food with price slashed because they're about to go off.
Gina said her idea made her realize she's a better cook. Moreover, they can now afford to go on holiday because they have more savings. "In fact, most of it tastes better because I know how much I'm saving and that means more fun days out for me and my daughter and maybe a little full price wine for me," the thrifty mom said to The New Day via Express.
Thus, the thrifty mom is encouraging all parents to follow her footstep. Her best advice is: "If you see one of the teams marking things down don't be afraid to ask when they usually do it."
This extremely thrifty mom has a really good idea, considering the fact that one-third of the produced food in the world which is approximately 1.3 billion tons gets lost or being wasted, according to End Food Waste Now.org. So, what do you think? Can you give your family a better quality life by following the strategy of the thrifty mom?
