'Captain America' Hydra Controversy: Chris Evans Not Happy With Comic Book Twist; Angry Fans Reject Spoiler

"Captain America" is the ultimate all-American superhero, but then his role as a savior of the oppressed might have been one big ruse. Marvel released a new comic that reveals his links to Hydra and this has fans really angry. "Captain America: Civil War" star Chris Evans also reacted to the controversy.

In the new comic series, "Captain America: Steve Rogers #1," it was revealed that the Cap, or his alter ego Steve Rogers, is actually working as a deep cover agent for the terrorist group Hydra, which has ties with the Nazis. Rogers' association with the group dates back to his childhood and his family have been Hydra operatives as well.

The idea was hatched in 2014 by writer Nick Spencer and Marvel pursued this to "push the button" of its avid followers, per Time. However, it did more than that as the revelation has fans slamming the idea the Cap is a traitor. Many took to Twitter to express their anger over the betrayal.

Even the actor who plays "Captain America" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCE) was unhappy about the big reveal in the comics. Chris Evans posted a simple message on his Twitter expressing his disbelief. It's still not known whether this new story will figure in the movie's plots, since MCE follows a different timeline than the comics.

Marvel's executive director Tom Brevoort tells CNN Money that this is "just a tip of the iceberg." There's no mind control happening with Steve Rogers and he's not a clone as well. The new comic series is a reboot of "Captain America" and Marvel wants readers hooked for now "to see if you're paying attention," said Brevoort.

Meanwhile, the writer of the comics reboot assures his followers he's okay despite the backlash and the throng of angry fans sending him messages. He said he's proud of what he's done with the story and he's excited about the next chapters.
