Psyonix's "Rocket League," a soccer video game featuring rocket-powered cars as players, has become a smash hit. First released in July 2015 as a free DLC on the PlayStation 4 (PS4), the game has grossed over $110 million in sales and its number and popularity are still rising.
The announcement of its unexpected success comes just as "Rocket League" is set to release an update this June. Players can soon be driving with customized vehicles, which should make for a more exciting gameplay.
"Rocket League" Free DLC And Cross-Play Integration
Forbes reports that "Rocket League" has engaged over 15 million gamers since its launch and over five million are actively playing as of April. It is only on the PS4 that the game was offered for free during its launch, but it is also available for the PC and the Xbox One. The company acknowledges that nearly half of its players are PS4 gamers.
Engadget reports that the success of "Rocket League" could also be due to its quick updates and added features, aside from the PS4 offer. Its developer, Psyonix, has already given gamers a basketball mode and a cross-play integration between PC and Xbox One gamers.
"Rocket League" DLC Updates For June
The game is due for another update this June with an exciting customization feature. Gamers will soon be able to either paint or certify their car. The "Painted" feature is still limited since the parts or items, as well as the colors, will be randomly assigned. The "Certified" feature will have items with a stat tracking system. Players of "Team Fortress 2" might be familiar with it as the system is similar, per Game Spot.
"Rocket League" will also add maps and spotlights after the game, as well as an improvement of the quick chat command in the June update. Psyonix promised it will detail the expansion in full once it's out.
