Microsoft announced its Xbox One Project Scorpio during the E3. However, the details to the console have mostly been kept under wraps, aside from the fact that it is going to be Microsoft's most powerful yet.
A month after the hype of Project Scorpio, Microsoft heads Phil Spencer, Mike Ybarra and Shannon Loftis sat down with The Guardian to further discuss and clarify what the coming console will deliver. Why is Microsoft making another console when it is coming out with an Xbox One S (slim) version this year? Will gamers be able to see the unit at the Gamescon?
Xbox One Project Scorpio Gaming Compatibility
First off, the Microsoft executives stated that they studied the mobile market in developing the Xbox One Project Scorpio. From there, they concluded that consumers expect apps - or in this case, games -- must also work even if the unit is upgraded. Microsoft wants to power up game compatibility in its consoles. "We're focusing more on how do we deliver gaming in a boundless way to our players," the executives said.
The seven-year cycle in console development is essentially non-existent at this point. For Microsoft, the gamers should able to choose to play their games from among the three units: Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One Scorpio. Developers are already on board this idea and have been doing so for the last few months. "A game they make for Xbox One today will run beautifully on S and run beautifully and look better on Scorpio," Loftis said.
Xbox One Project Scorpio Hardware Upgrade, Trade-In
The Xbox One Scorpio console will also be compatible for use with old Xbox One controllers and even the add-on Xbox One Kinect. However, some games will be created specifically for the Scorpio console to fully utilize its 4K resolution and VR capabilities. Yet, these games will still run on the lower end Xbox One consoles, but with reduced gaming experience.
Eventually, Xbox One owners might also take part in trade-in deals for their units, should they decide to upgrade. Per Daily Star, Microsoft is coming up with a system with the Xbox One Project Scorpio that will make the transition from one console to another easier.
Xbox One Project Scorpio At The Gamescon?
Meanwhile, Microsoft announced via a blog post that it will be participating at the Gamescon in August in Europe. However, expect no appearance for the Xbox One Scorpio in the event. According to the Microsoft bosses, there will be no major press conference and only an Xbox Fan Fest.
