There's no denying it. "Stranger Things" has been this summer season's biggest surprise in Hollywood. While Netflix doesn't reveal its actual numbers, a new report has confirmed just how big the show has gotten. With such buzz around it, "Stranger Things" Season 2 renewal looks locked and certain.
A total of 8.2 million viewers apparently watched "Stranger Things" since its full 8-episode season was released on Netflix on July 15. The numbers have been unofficially culled by SymphonyAM and the new show ranks third in viewership, next to "Fuller House" and "Orange is the New Black," per Business Insider.
Netflix doesn't rely on ratings to track a show's success, but instead base their numbers on how big subscriptions have grown. A Netflix executive, Reed Hastings, also confirmed via The Guardian, that they base a show's success on the rankings at TV sites like IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes.
"Stranger Things" has a 9.1/10 score on IMDb and a 94 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. It fully satisfies Netflix's considerations for a hit that Hastings said it "would be dumb not to" renew the series for Season 2.
On the heels of its success, "Stranger Things" is digitally releasing the first part of its official soundtrack this Friday, Aug. 12. Rolling Stones reports that the CD will hit stores Sept. 16, while volume 2 will follow on Aug. 19 (digital downloads) and Sept. 23 (CD release) respectively.
Meanwhile, "Stranger Things" creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, revealed that they were rejected more than 15 times by TV networks before Netflix took a chance on the show. They hinted that some time will have to pass for "Stranger Things" Season 2, especially now that the kids in the cast are growing through puberty, per New York Times.
The first season of "Stranger Things" is still streaming on Netflix. First time to hear about the show? Watch the teaser below for some ideas.
