TV viewers' current obsession for the last few weeks has been the sleeper series "Stranger Things" on Netflix. The show has been out on the streaming site for almost two weeks and has emerged as a pop culture favorite.
Netflix subscribers, who binge-watched eight episodes of "Stranger Things," have different takes on what makes the show successful. However, majority agree on one thing: Dustin is the show's best character and when the series gets officially confirmed for Season 2, Dustin should be its main focus.
'Stranger Things' Season 2: Producers Agree Dustin Is The Best
Dustin is played by child actor Gaten Matarazzo and initially, his role was written as a cliché, according to "Stranger Things" creator Matt and Ross Duffer, per Hit Fix. They ended up tweaking Dustin's characterization because of the actor. "We realized what a powerhouse Gaten was," they said.
The changes proved to be effective because Dustin has been the most entertaining person on the show. "All the love that he's getting, he deserves," said the Duffer brothers.
'Stranger Things' Season 2: Dustin/Gaten Matarrazo & Cleidocranial Dysplasia
Paste Magazine puts Dustin as the number one best character on "Stranger Things," describing him as funny, smart and a charmer. The Duffer brothers say this is how Gaten Matarrazo is in real life as well.
On the show, Dustin professed that he's toothless because he has a medical condition called Cleidocranial dysplasia, which Gaten Matarrazo has in real life. The writers have incorporated this fact in his storyline. Cleidocranial dysplasia affects the growth and development of bones and teeth, which explains Dustin/Gaten's quirks.
Because of Dustin's oddity, viewers of "Stranger Things" have been wondering if he should be the focus of "Stranger Things" Season 2, according to some fans on Reddit. Little is known about Dustin's family and background from the first season, hence, fans welcome the exploration into this storyline next.
Meanwhile, Gaten Matarrazo's co-star and TV best friend, Finn Wolfhard (Mike), revealed that the actor recently had surgery for his teeth to correct his condition. "Now Gaten has perfect pearly whites on the top," said Finn Wolfhard, via Blackburn News.
"Stranger Things" Season 1 is currently streaming on Netflix across all territories. It also stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Matthe Modine, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Cale McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp and Millie Brown. The show is expected to return for a second season, pending official announcement from Netflix.
