‘This Is Us’ Episode 3 News, Promo & Spoilers: Bumpy Road Ahead For Kate-Toby Romance; Sam Trammell In Recurring Role

The impressive success of Dan Fogelman's "This Is Us" brought about a full-season order for the dramedy series even before its second episode aired last week. New cast members are being added to the show now that its immediate future in NBC has been cemented.

"True Blood" alum Sam Trammell was recently cast on "This Is Us" as Ben, "the frontman of a popular blues/jazz band," Entertainment Weekly reported. Ben will debut in the series later this year. Aside from starring on "True Blood" as the shapeshifter Sam, Trammell also had roles in "The Fault in Our Stars," "Dexter," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," "House," and "Children's Hospital."

The first two episodes of "This Is Us" showcased shocking revelations and twists. The series -- which premiered on Sept. 20 and stars Mandy Moore (Rebecca), Milo Ventimiglia (Jack), Sterling K. Brown (Randall), Chrissy Metz (Kate), and Justin Hartley (Kevin) -- follows a group of thirtysomethings who are revealed to be related and are all in the same family at the end of the pilot episode. The show's timeline jumps from the '70s or '80s to present time.

Kate's romance with Toby (Chris Sullivan) will blossom in the upcoming episodes of "This Is Us." As what was seen in the pilot episode, Kate was initially hesitant to start a relationship with Toby because she isn't ready to be in a commitment yet. Fortunately, Toby insisted on his feelings.

Speaking about the two's budding romance, Sullivan told Hollywood Life that the viewers will see "a great deal of levity" and a "great deal of love" from Toby. However, a "romance for the ages" between Kate and Toby should be expected, too.

Despite this promising future for the Kate-Toby romance, Sullivan admitted that the road is going to be bumpy for the two. The actor said that the duo will have to face "relationship stuff" and "a lot of body image stuff" especially from Kate's part, but they will handle those obstacles with "grace and with humor."

Kate's most prominent issue is her weight, which she struggled with ever since she was young. She wants to lose excess pounds and Toby will be there to support her along the way. While cheering on Kate, Toby will also ensure that she won't be too hard on herself.

Being with Kate will teach Toby "how to be himself and not have to put on a show" just like what he does with other people. Sullivan believes that Kate and Toby's connection will reveal the two's true and authentic selves.
