Episode five of "This Is Us" finally revealed Jack's (Milo Ventimiglia) fate in the present timeline. As what was previously rumored, Jack is dead. A key scene featuring Randall (Sterling K. Brown) in the recent episode may have foreshadowed another major death as well.
"This Is Us" episode five revealed that Jack died some time after 2006, according to TVGuide. This explains why he wasn't present in any "This Is Us" scenes with his adult children and with Rebecca (Mandy Moore) when she visited Randall's home at the end of episode two. Miguel (Jon Huertas) took Jack's place during that visit.
Kate (Chrissy Metz) was the one who revealed Jack's fate when she told Toby (Chris Sullivan) the reason why she prefers to watch the Steelers game alone at home. It turns out, however, that she is not alone because Jack's ashes stored in a golden urn was with her.
Though Jack's fate was finally revealed, the recent "This Is Us" episode also raised several questions about the circumstances surrounding his death. How did he pass away and when exactly did it happen? Was he still with Rebecca when he died or did she already leave him for Miguel?
Episode five of "This Is Us" also popped questions in viewers' minds about William's (Ron Cephas Jones) fate. In the episode's final moments, Kevin (Justin Hartley) was heard delivering a touching monologue about the meaning of life while scenes from the past and present timelines were shown.
In one scene, Randall was seen somberly packing up William's possessions in a box and then sitting down after, clutching William's hat. "This Is Us" viewers already know that William has a terminal illness and he's only living on borrowed time. The Randall sequence is probably set in the near future, a time when his biological father is already dead.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jones said that Randall and William's relationship will be further explored in upcoming "This Is Us" episodes. According to the actor, there's an episode "that's just going to be about Randall and his father."
Jones also said that William has formed a special bond with Kevin. William had a huge part in how Kevin delivered his beautiful monologue and how he explained death to his nieces. In that "This Is Us" scene, it was evident that Kevin likes William's company and William, in turn, is capable of seeing through Kevin's issues.
"This Is Us" returns for episode six titled "Career Days" on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Watch the promo below.
