Disney/Marvel's "Doctor Strange" hasn't debuted in the U.S. yet but it already bowed in international theaters. Reviews for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's latest offering starring Benedict Cumberbatch were mostly positive, which could pave the way for a sequel. A follow-up for "Doctor Strange" is unconfirmed at this point but director Scott Derrickson already has ideas about the villain he would like to showcase next.
In a recent interview with IGN, Derrickson revealed that he would like to introduce "the character of Nightmare and the concept that the Nightmare Realm is a dimension" in the "Doctor Strange" sequel. Both Nightmare and Doctor Strange first appeared in the comic book edition "Strange Tales" #110 in July 1963.
For those unacquainted with the character, Nightmare is the tyrannical ruler of the Nightmare World within the Dream Dimension, a realm that humans visit while sleeping. Nightmare has green hair and owns a black, horned horse named Dreamstalker.
According to Marvel.com, Nightmare is "a Class Three demon who influences the dreams of living beings as they sleep, feeding on humanity's psychic energies in particular." Sometimes, the villain tortures souls and traps their dream-selves in his realm.
Nightmare is no doubt an interesting villain and it would be exciting to bring him to life to the big screen. Derrickson, however, didn't include the character in "Doctor Strange" because "that's a bit of a complex idea to try to introduce everything we do introduce and introduce the idea of nightmares themselves as being a dimension." Still, the filmmaker wishes to explore Nightmare and hopefully include him in future Marvel films.
Marvel hasn't announced a "Doctor Strange" sequel yet, but the titular character will appear in the 2018 flick "Avengers: Infinity War." Marvel executive Kevin Feige said that the next "Avengers" film could feature The Illuminati, a secret society composed of some of the strongest Marvel characters including Strange, Mr. Fantastic, Charles Xavier, Black Bolt, and Namor, ComingSoon.net listed.
"Doctor Strange" had an $86 million opening weekend at the international box office, Deadline reported. The film was praised for its stunning visuals, impressive action scenes, and Cumberbatch's portrayal of Stephen Strange, Parent Herald previously reported.
"Doctor Strange" has a Nov. 4 release date in U.S. theaters. The movie also stars Tilda Swinton (The Ancient One), Rachel McAdams (Christine Palmer), Mads Mikkelsen (Kaecilius), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Baron Mordo), and Benedict Wong (Wong).
