Jon Bernthal is in the middle of filming his Netflix/Marvel TV show "The Punisher." As Frank Castle's alter ego, there is a lot of physicality involved in playing the action hero. The actor discusses how he has prepared for the role and the potential for playing "The Punisher" on the big screen.
Training as Frank Castle on "The Punisher" begins at 4 a.m. Jon Bernthal revealed that his workout involves metabolic conditioning mixed with jiu-jitsu and boxing so that he can sustain himself during the fight scenes. On top of this, he also has weapons training together with the show's stuntmen.
Jon Bernthal further shares that he watches his diet and is mindful of fueling his body with energy. "I'm pretty strict about what is going in the body," the actor told Men's Journal. "It's also a bit of a mindset thing for the character of Frank." Basically, he believes that stuffing himself with food won't work for himself and his character.
Asked whether he is open to the idea of playing Frank Castle and "The Punisher" on the big screen, Jon Bernthal begged off saying that the focus is the TV show on Netflix. "[The movie] is a bit above my pay grade right now," he told the news outlet.
Jon Bernthal's performance as Frank Castle and "The Punisher" has received a lot of praises. There was initially no plan for the character's own series, yet it was the response of the viewers to his work, which can be watched in "Daredevil" Season 2, that became the tipping point to Netflix granting a solo show.
It's still unclear what "The Punisher" will center on given the wealth of materials from the comic book series. Comic Verse provides different possibilities that might either be taken from comics stories like "The Punisher: Year One," "The Slavers" or "Kingpin."
For now, what's certain is that Jon Bernthal will be joined by Ben Barnes as Billy Russo and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Micro. Deborah Ann Woll from "Daredevil" will also be in "The Punisher."
