‘The Croods 2’ Cancelled By DreamWorks Animation And Universal After Release Date Was Pushed Back To 2018

"The Croods" sequel is no longer happening as DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures decided to focus on another projects. The news came after "The Croods 2" release date was pushed back to 2018 following the sale of DWA to Comcast.

"The Croods" was first released in 2013, and the sequel had long been in the works. "The Croods 2" was initially planned to be released in December 2017, which was later delayed to 2018. Now, Variety reported that the toon that featured the voices of Nicolas Cage and Emma Stone has been canceled.

While it was Universal Pictures that ultimately decided, reports said that the project had been experiencing some setback even before Comcast took over DreamWorks Animation. DWA reportedly also considered killing the movie.

However, there's still hope for "The Croods 2" to happen, only not in the near future. A source from Universal told Variety, "'The Croods' is still very much in the DreamWorks catalog. It's not unheard of that it might be something someone takes a look at in the future."

"The Croods" features a prehistoric family who deals with their day to day life such as gathering their food, and then finding a new home as the world is threatened by a massive destruction. Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, and Catherine Keener are some of the voices behind the main characters of the animated film.

Meanwhile, some 30 employees who are working on the second installment of "The Croods" franchise would lose their jobs. DreamWorks said they hope to retain them and so some might be transferred to another projects.

"The Croods" (2013) grossed $587.2 million at the worldwide box office. Other cast members include Ryan Reynolds, Clark Duke, and Cloris Leachman. Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders wrote and directed the film while Kristine Belson and Jane Hartwell produced.
