‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special 2016 Spoilers: Official Air Time, More Plot Details Announced! ‘Doctor Mysterio’ Meaning Revealed

Fans are only mere weeks away from this year's "Doctor Who" Christmas Special. The upcoming episode will showcase The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) teaming up with a superhero figure to save Manhattan from the attack of brain-swapping aliens.

Justin Chatwin portrays the superhero figure -- dubbed as Grant a.k.a. The Ghost -- in the upcoming "Doctor Who" Christmas Special titled "The Return of Doctor Mysterio." Aside from him, The Doctor's epic New York adventure will also include Nardole (Matt Lucas) and an investigative journalist named Lucy Fletcher (Charity Wakefield). Grant and Lucy are both in the vein of Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

A short plot detail for the "Doctor Who" Christmas Special asks the question, "What will be revealed when we see behind the mask?" CarterMatt reported. It turns out there's something more behind The Ghost's heroic persona. The Christmas Special's title, "The Return of Doctor Mysterio," has been puzzling some fans, as well. What's the explanation behind it?

According to Radio Times, "Doctor Who" translates to "Doctor Mysterio" in Mexico, though it can also serve as "a riff" on classic superhero comic book titles. It's possible that Doctor Mysterio is the supervillain-y alias that the Time Lord calls himself after crossing paths with The Ghost.

The "Doctor Who" Christmas Special airs at 5:45 PM London time, Christmas Day, on BBC One. Check out the official poster for the upcoming episode below.

There are rumors that The Ghost's costume is concealing a capital 'I' behind the 'G' imprinted on his chest (seen on the "Doctor Who" Christmas Special official sneak peek released recently). This speculation means that Grant could be one of The Doctor's oldest enemies, the Great Intelligence. Chatwin's character possesses special abilities such as invulnerability, flight, and super strength.

"Doctor Who" Season 10 premieres in April 2017 with Pearl Mackie as the new companion named Bill. There are rumors that the upcoming season would be Capaldi and Mackie's last, with the former getting replaced by a "younger" and "dashing male lead" a la David Tennant's Tenth Doctor, Parent Herald previously reported. Season 11 will see the departure of showrunner Steven Moffat, with Chris Chibnall of "Broadchurch" stepping in to fill the role.
