The "Fast and Furious" star, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, has recently joined the Walt Disney family. He has signed for a major role in the animated musical "Moana" and will be leading another Disney movie according to CinemaBlend.
The report suggests that Walt Disney Company has been a fan of adapting movies from their popular theme park attractions, and they will be doing another. According to Deadline, Walt Disney is actively developing a film inspired by the "Jungle Cruise" ride. The said film will star the professional wrestler.
The "Jungle Cruise" was one of the original attractions when the Anaheim park opened in 1995. Since then, it remains to be one of the favorite attractions in the Adventureland. Currently, John Requa and Glenn Ficarra are penning the script.
According to The Wrap, the film has no director yet, but John Davis and John Fox will be producing for Davis Entertainment.
"Jungle Cruise" was docked for the last few years with little to no progress on the project's development since the "Toy Story" of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen became attached in 2011. Although the boat cruise attraction has been renovated and set in modern times, The Rock's version is expected to be a period picture.
Deadline notes that filming "Jungle Cruise" is an interesting gamble for Disney because their history of movie adaptations inspired from theme park attractions has been inconsistent. For instance, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie series with Johnny Depp has been an ultimate hit while Brad Bird's "Tomorrowland" was a flop when it was released earlier this year.
Moreover, Disney's "Haunted Mansion" was another miss. The movie critic website, Rotten Tomatoes, rated it with 13 percent in its tomatometer and 30 percent audience score. Critics consensus reveals that the film was "Neither scary nor funny, The Haunted Mansion is as lifeless as the ghosts in the movie." This means that "Jungle Cruise" will be something that we will look forward to and only time can tell if it will be a hit or a flop.
According to CinemaBlend, Dwayne seems to be more invested. The actor's plate is already full. Recently he has been filming the action comedy, "Central Intelligence," and is in pre-production on the "Baywatch" movie. Moreover, he will be reprising his role in the upcoming franchise of "Fast and Furious," will be joining the remake of "Big Trouble in Little China," the family adventure "Journey 3: From The Earth To The Moon," the video game adaptation "Rampage" and his superhero debut "Shazam."
If Johnson were to make all the films mentioned above, more likely, "Jungle Cruise" will be done by 2020.
